The Museum of Climate Hope will support climate educators across a variety of subjects and engage young people (especially pupils in Key Stages 2-3) and other visitors to Oxford museums, libraries and gardens in an exploration of climate change and hope. Working in partnership with all six of the Oxford GLAM institutions, the Rumble Museum at Cheney School, the TORCH Climate Crisis Thinking network, the Future of Education and Training for the Climate research hub at the Department of Education, and the Oxford Schools Sustainability Network, we propose the creation of a "digital trail" connecting objects in GLAM collections and the Rumble Museum with digital content. The objects in this trail will already be items on display in public collections – artefacts from indigenous cultures that adapted to extreme weather, instruments related to innovations in the history of science, etc. – that will be reframed to explore climate change and complemented with appropriate temporary signage and multimedia storytelling from Oxford researchers and museum staff. The project will build on active, collaborative relationships across the University of Oxford on climate education research and activities, as well as strong relationships with local schools, developed in our work through the SoGE Climate Education Lab (the ‘experimental’ partner of the Future ETC hub). We plan to work closely with educators and learners – especially the Rumble Museum’s year 8 and 9 "Museum Council" and the student organising committee of the Oxford Schools Sustainability Network – to co-create and evaluate the learning experience. The project aims to support young people by showcasing surprising, positive, solution-orientated climate stories, as well as providing a platform for them to share their own stories of climate hope.
