Defining Climate Education

In this project, we define climate education as transdisciplinary and cross-curricular, encompassing climate science, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and emotional and creative responses to the climate crisis. Climate education is also fully integrated with school sustainability, incorporating environmental impacts related to biodiversity, energy, food, waste and water. While the primary focus of this project is climate education at the primary and secondary school level, we recognise the importance of age-appropriate climate education from early childhood to higher education, as well as the intersection of the climate and biodiversity crises and movements for social justice. Climate education also takes place outside of the formal education system as an informal, learner-driven, lifelong activity.

There are many ways to define and approach climate change education, and the illustration to the right shows a high level view of the climate education ecosystem to spark a discussion about intervention points for research and other activities.
